Sharpening Or Repair? Take The Quiz

How Does It Feel?

Mizutani Scissors Diagnostic Quiz

Answer two quick questions to discover which service your scissors need.

1
2

Part 1: What are you experiencing with your scissors?

Hair "scoots" or "slides" toward the tips
When cutting a straight line, the hair feels like it's "dodging" the blades. There's no "bite" to hold the hair in place.
You feel a "jump," "click," or "gritty" sensation
As you close the blades, it feels like there's a tiny piece of sand stuck in the metal. Usually from hitting a comb or foil.
Scissors feel "heavy" or "stiff"
You have to "muscle" them shut, and by the end of the day, your thumb or wrist is aching. The blades feel like they're crashing into each other.
Tips "chew" or "tug" the hair
The scissors cut beautifully at the base, but the very last millimeter at the tip tugs instead of snipping cleanly.

Part 2: Have your scissors been serviced before?

Serviced by Mizutani
My scissors have been previously sharpened or serviced by Mizutani Scissors Canada.
Serviced by Another Sharpener
My scissors have been sharpened or serviced by a third-party sharpener (not Mizutani).
Never Serviced
My scissors have never been sharpened or serviced before.

Sharpening & Repair Services

We offer professional Mizutani sharpening and repair services performed exclusively by Certified Mizutani Sharpening professionals, using official Mizutani Scissors Japan methods.

Each pair of scissors is serviced according to Mizutani standards to protect blade geometry, balance, and long-term cutting performance.

Two Levels of Service

Our sharpening and repair services are designed to address two very different needs:

Sharpening & Realignment (Level 1)

Restores cutting performance and balance affected by normal professional use.

Advanced Repair (Level 2)

Corrects physical damage to the blade that requires reshaping metal and rebuilding edge geometry.

Sharpening vs. Repair — How to Tell the Difference

Feature Sharpening & Realignment Advanced Repair
The Symptom Hair pushes, bends, or folds at the tips Scissors crunch, catch, or hesitate when closing
Visual Check Blade edge appears dull or shiny under light Visible nick, chip, or dent in the steel
Physical State Scissors open and close smoothly Blades feel sprung, loose, or misaligned (often after a drop)
The Goal Restore the razor-sharp convex edge Reshape metal and restore proper blade geometry (arc)
Typical Frequency Every 3–6 months with high-volume professional use Only after an accident, impact, or extended neglect

Our Consumer Confidence Guarantee

We understand that it isn’t always possible to know exactly what your scissors need until they’ve been closely inspected.

  • If you select Advanced Repair ($160) and we determine that your scissors only require Standard Sharpening ($120), we’ll complete the sharpening and automatically refund the $40 difference to your original payment method.
  • If you select Standard Sharpening and we discover damage that requires repair, we’ll pause the service, share photos of what we see, and request your approval before proceeding.

No work is performed beyond the selected service without your consent.

Service Review & Quality Assurance

Each pair of scissors is inspected upon receipt and serviced according to Mizutani standards.

If you have a concern with the service received, please contact us promptly upon delivery so we can review the issue. Service reviews are evaluated case by case and handled at our discretion.

Sharpening Timeline

Due to ongoing global shipping and logistics conditions, sharpening and repair services may take up to 4–6 weeks at this time.

While timelines may vary based on service volume and assessment findings, every pair of scissors is returned only once it meets Mizutani performance standards.

Important Notes

  • Sharpening restores performance but does not correct damage or structural issues
  • Repair services are assessed individually and may involve additional costs
  • Customers are responsible for shipping scissors to our service centre
  • Service timelines may vary based on assessment findings and service volume

Authorized Service Requirement

To maintain performance and eligibility for future service or warranty consideration, Mizutani scissors must be sharpened or repaired only by authorized Mizutani professionals.

Third-Party Sharpening Disclosure

If your scissors have been sharpened by a third-party sharpener, they may require Advanced Repair rather than standard sharpening.

Non-authorized sharpening often removes excessive amounts of high-quality steel, alters blade geometry, and requires corrective work to restore proper performance.
